Day 104: Salta to Cafayate – Magical Ruta 68

Landscape along Ruta 68 in Argentina

Kissing Salta Good Bye I was on the road again and when I first felt a bit sad to leave the beautiful town I did not know what I should experience a short time later… the fantastic route 68 which is linking Salta to Cafayate!!!!

I have heard the road was in particular very beautiful and indeed it was more than that, simply breathtaking. The road lead me through amazing stabled rock formations through a canyon which valley was meandering through the endless landscape.

One of my many stops was at the so called Devils throat, the Gargo del Diablo. A splendid creation of nature which left me speechless for a while. Just standing there and trying to realise where I was… it could have been on another planet as well.

During my next stop to take some pictures of the beautiful valley which was enclosed by the canyon I met a super nice Columbian with his BMW 650 GS on his way down to Ushuaia. After we chatted a bit we decided to continue our drive together and another great driving coalition was created.

Arriving in Cafayate we decided to visit one of the famous vineyards in the region and made a spontaneous wine tasting. Somehow I misunderstood the waiter and instead of wine to taste I ordered two full glasses of heavy white and red wine, lol.

Luckily, our hostal was not very far away and with a nice dinner in town we went quite early to bed.

Gerardo had a super tight schedule and was planning to be already back in Colombia beginning of December. I also wanted to speed up my journey but was not sure if I would like to follow the same pace. It seemed to me a bit like rushing through…

However, it was a perfect first day and we got on very well! I gained a great new friend…
